A recent article in RenewableEnergyWorld.com describes a pretty polarized situation developing in Ontario, as renewable energy surges forward to claim a major role in the province’s energy future. The stalwart nuclear power industry appears to be worried, for good reason. The numbers, both in costs as well as time, are against it.
The essential crux comes down to transmission infrastructure: distributed renewables need one sort of grid system, while big centralized nuclear power needs something completely different. There are only so many resources available. As usual, it will come down to politics, timing, money, and the realities of a resource-constrained world….
